  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar

  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast

  • 1 cup warm water

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

For the filling:

  • 1 cup diced sweet ham

  • 4 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 onion, finely chopped

  • 1 tablespoons soy sauce

  • 1 tablespoons oyster sauce

  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar

  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil

  • 1/2 cup pizza sauce

  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

  • 1/4 cup diced pineapple

  • 1/4 cup sliced bell peppers

  • 1/4 cup button mushrooms

For assembly:

  • 12 pieces parchment paper squares (approximately 4x4 inches)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the dough:

  2. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.

  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and sugar. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture and vegetable oil.

  4. Mix until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.

  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 to 1.5 hours until it doubles in size.

  6. Prepare the filling:

  7. In a pan, heat some oil over medium heat. Sauté garlic and onions until fragrant.

  8. Add the diced ham, mushroom, bell pepper and pineapple.

  9. Stir in soy sauce, oyster sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, and pizza sauce. Cook for another 5-7 minutes until the flavors meld together. Set aside to cool.

  10. Assemble the Siopao:

  11. Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 12 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball.

  12. Flatten each ball into a circle with your palms or a rolling pin. Place a spoonful of the filling in the center of the dough circle.

  13. Gather the edges of the dough circle and pinch them together at the top, sealing the filling inside and add the mozzarella cheese. Place the siopao seam side down on a parchment paper square.

  14. Repeat with the remaining dough and filling.

  15. Steam the Siopao:

  16. Arrange the filled siopao on a steamer basket, leaving some space between each piece to allow for expansion.

  17. Steam the siopao over boiling water for about 15-20 minutes until they are puffed up and cooked through.

  18. Remove from the steamer and let them cool for a few minutes before serving.
